… Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God (Luke 6:12).
Many people read the New Testament and think, “Wow, Jesus did so many miracles; God in the flesh is awesome.” But what many fail to realize is that Jesus did all of His miracles NOT AS GOD, but as a Holy Spirit anointed human being. If He had done His miracles as God, He could have never said, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father (John 14:12). His Holy Spirit anointed life produced His effectiveness.
Now, the question becomes, how did He access that power? When we can answer this question, we can begin to move into the greater works ourselves. The answer is found in the first words of this post – He “spent all night praying to God” (Luke 6:12). Jesus’ secret to accessing the power of the Holy Spirit in His life was simple, He lived a life of total devotion to prayer. He PRAYED, regularly, boldly, and yes, even lengthily… Now, not every prayer is required to be long, but to the person who is seeking results that are supernatural and undeniable, that person must learn to pray not just the impromptu prayers while having coffee in the morning, but those protracted, extended period of times prayers of abiding seasons of consecration.
If we want to live lives that have amazing, supernatural results, we need to imitate Jesus’ life of prayer and spend time, regularly in abiding prayer that seeks the heart of the Father. We must remember that though salvation is free, relationship with God, intimacy with Him, and a life of demonstrable power is costly. Our prayers over meals will get those meals blessed, but our extended times of “all night” kind of prayer will get the results that are only released into the lives of those who abide, take time, and pay the price to pray.
